The John Sutton Chair of Exercise and Sport Science
Resistance training, age-related changes in muscle and functional performance,
education of health care professionals in exercise physiology and exercise programming
for older adults, integration of exercise, nutrition and body composition.
Maria Fiatarone Singh is an internationally-recognized physician, educator, and researcher
in the area of exercise physiology, functional performance, health-related quality of life,
and nutrition across the age span. She maintains academic appointments and government
funding in the US and Australia, and currently works with colleagues and students in the US,
France, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, China, Israel, and Australia to carry out basic
and applied research, develop better exercise equipment for older adults, disseminate exercise
programs which she has developed, and train allied health professionals and exercise leaders.
She has been instrumental in influencing industry and government policy through her membership
on the Boards of Osteoporosis Australia, the Brookdale Foundation on Aging, the US National
Institute of Health task force on Physical Activity and Aging, and the Keiser Foundation on Aging;
as a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, and the Royal Australasian College of Physicians;
and as founder and director of the non-profit Fit For Your Life Foundation.

A/Prof Denyer is interested in using microarrays to look at gene
expression patterns in circumstances of metabolic interest. For example:
How does gene expression change in different tissues when we consume
different diets - especially those of different glycemic index?
What gene expression patterns characterise different types of obesity?
He has submitted a scholarship proposal investigating how training affects
muscle gene expression.
