Satellite Tracking of Athletes

GPS technology and its application in sport will undergo a thorough examination in the latest course offering from
Sport Knowledge Australia (SKA) - "Effective Use of GPS Tracking Data". The one-day seminar takes place in Sydney on
14 December.
SYDNEY – The one-day seminar will be presented by Troy Flanagan, Head of Sport Science at the Victorian
Institute of Sport, Dr Aaron Coutts from University of Technology, Sydney and Sport Knowledge Australia personnel –
Professor Kevin Norton, Director of Research and Knowledge Services and researcher Dr Carlos Ohanian.
A physiologist and anthropometrist (the study of human body measurement for use in anthropological classification and
comparison), Troy Flanagan has worked as a sports scientist for the Sultan of Brunei and collaborated on sport equipment
development with RMIT's Department of Aerospace Engineering.
Flanagan is responsible for creating a new tracking system to analyse the performance of football players.
Flanagan is one of four highly-qualified scientists who will share their latest findings with physical conditioners and fellow
academics who are pursuing excellence in sport.
Dr Aaron Coutts has a keen interest in physiological responses to physical training and exercise, and researching management of
stress levels and recovery. A senior lecturer at the School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism at the University of Technology, Sydney,
Coutts is also a contributor to key sports science journals.
Professor Kevin Norton is a widely-published academic, whose knowledge is sought by educational institutions as well as individual
sporting organisations looking to achieve optimum management of their athletes. His colleague Dr Carlos Ohanian is working on an
exclusive SKA investigation into the application of GPS.
"There is intense interest in the sports world in tracking athletes during training and in competition," says Norton. "This SKA
seminar offers a deeper understanding of GPS technologies and their applications in these areas."
