Production of SKA’s teaching and learning product, “Science Through Sport”, is in full swing after agreement
was reached with publisher Blake Education for Australian and New Zealand marketing and distribution
rights. “Science Through Sport” provides secondary level science teachers with an engaging and interactive
means by which to teach the principles of physics, mathematics, biology and chemistry using sport
scenarios.
Professor Kevin Norton, SKA’s Director of Research & Knowledge Services, explained “Research tells us
that 80% of students enjoy sport and so what a great vehicle through which to teach the principles of
science? In many cases students will undertake a physical activity, collect personal data and use
interactive CD-Rom based screens to develop ‘what if’ scenarios and compare their results with classmates
as well as world champions”.
Early concepts being developed include Energy Systems, Game Analysis and Force, Mass and Acceleration.
Melbourne-based Blake Education is Australia’s largest education publisher. The first products will be in
schools by the end of this year.
