Senior SKA personnel recently met with the European Union’s Commissioner for Education, Culture and Youth,
Jan Figel and Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Bruno Julien, as part of the Commissioner’s tour of
Australia. The EU's interest in SKA stemmed from the innovative approach SKA has taken to creating
international, high quality and flexible learning environments.
The meeting saw SKA’s Peter Kerr (Chairman), Leighton Wood (CEO), Paul Jonson (Dir of Academic
Programme) and Kevin Norton (Dir of Research & Knowledge Services) explain the areas of Professional
Education, Distance Education, Teaching & Learning Resources and Knowledge Services that SKA is involved
in.
Commissioner Figel and his delegation outlined the EU’s innovation agenda for European universities
and indicated that opportunities exist for collaboration between SKA and EU. Particular interest
was expressed in SKA’s vision for an international, mixed mode delivery model and SKA’s research programme.
