Elite Sport Coaching Symposium
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MARTIN THOMPSON

School of Exercise and Sport Science, The University of Sydney Ass/Prof Thompson has an outstanding record as an ultra-marathon runner and middle - long distance athletics coach. Martin's primary research focus is endurance sport performance particularly temperature regulation, muscle fatigue, and damage. Prior to the Atlanta Olympic Games he coordinated the “Atlanta Heat Study”, investigating the likely effects of performing under anticipated hot dry conditions. Martin is an excellent example of how academic scholarship can be applied to practical sporting questions.



PROFESSOR KEVIN NORTON

School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia Professor Norton has held academic positions at the University of Newcastle, University of New South Wales and the University of South Australia. His current research focuses on the evolution of sports performance - and the causes and consequences of these changes. He has worked closely with senior coaches in both Australian Rules Football and Rugby Union in the analysis of player demands during matches, contributing to the design of training programmes to match these demands.



DR ISTVAN GORGENYI

Division of Sport Management & Policy in the School of Human Movement, Recreation & Policy, Dr Gorgenyi has an outstanding background in sport, with medals at the Olympics and World Championships as both player and coach. His career as a water polo coach spanned a period of 20 years in 3 countries, culminating in a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. With a PhD in Law/Politics and experience in clinical psychology, Dr Gorgenyi has a strong academic background to underpin his coaching experience.



DR DONNA O’CONNOR

Dr O’Connor’s teaching specialises in exercise physiology and the theory and practice of fitness training. Dr O’Connor’s research interests cover the fields of athletic profiling, optimising performance, injury prevention and coach education. She has worked extensively with elite performance teams in, basketball Track and Field, Rugby Union, and Rugby League.



DR CLIFF MALLETT

School of Human Movement Studies, The University of Queensland. Dr Mallett has previously served as a National High Performance Coach in track and field with the Australian Institute of Sport and the Queensland Academy of Sport. He has been a team coach on several Australian teams. Dr Mallet has conducted research into the motivational processes that drive elite athletes. He also has great interest in developing a more in-depth understanding of the complexities of the coaching process, with a particular emphasis on evaluating the effectiveness of coaches.



KENNETH GRAHAM

Head of Sport Science, NSW Institute of Sport Kenneth is head of Sports Science at the NSW Institute of Sport where he has overseen the provision of sports science support to elite athletes such as Brad McGee (Cycling) and Ian Thorpe (Swimming). He has a strong rapport with both athletes and coaches and is highly respected for his broad understanding of sport science and elite performance.



DR RIC CHARLESWORTH

Ric is a doctor of medicine, a former captain of the Australian Hockey Team, the State Hockey Team and the State Cricket Team. He was also in Federal parliament for 10 years when he retired to take up the position of National Coach of the Australian Women’s Hockey Team from 1993 until Sydney 2000. Ric has a passion for leadership, has written 3 successful books on coaching and is in demand as a performance consultant and motivational speaker.



JOHN BUCHANAN

National Director of the Australian Volleyball Federation John has had an outstanding coaching career. Coaching Queensland to their first Sheffield Shield victory, he has subsequently coached the Australian Cricket Team during the past 5 years of unprecedented success. He was awarded the inaugural Australian National League Coach of the Year award in 1997, and coached the Australian team when they won the 2002 World Team of the Year award from the Laureus World Sports Academy.
